Questions people ask
Honest answers.
The ones we get asked most. If yours is not here, ask it and we will add it.
What does it cost?
£95 a year for an independent venue, everything included and everyone trained. £75 a venue for small groups, £45 for estates of ten or more, £25 for estates of 200 or more. £495 for a students' union, capped, however many venues are on campus. Events and festivals on application. Prices exclude VAT. The full list is on the venues page.
How much work is it, honestly?
If you already hold Best Bar None, about five hours of management time spread over a month, one three-hour online course for one manager, and 45 minutes for each member of staff. No consultants, no new manuals. Most of the Ten take under an hour.
Do we have to hold Best Bar None first?
You need the six core competencies in place. Best Bar None covers all six and we encourage every venue to hold it. If you do not yet, we give you a template for each of the six and help on a free 15 minute call. Start with the readiness check.
What happens if we fail the test?
You get sixty days to fix what was found and one re-test, included in the fee. Nobody pays to fail. A second fail within twelve months and the badge comes down.
Will the Ask for Angela test cause a scene?
No. One Ambassador asks for Angela in a normal voice. The moment your staff start to respond, the Ambassador ends it with an agreed phrase: "Thank you, I am fine, I thought I saw someone I know." No taxi, no police, nobody removed. You learn it was a test from the report within 48 hours.
We turn away large groups of lads. Does the door rule stop that?
No. Your admission rules are yours: groups, capacity, intoxication, dress, banned lists. The rule is that they apply to everyone equally, and the same rule is applied to the next person in the queue. Nobody is refused because of who they are.
Will people take advantage of "needs-led"?
The courtesies you list are things nobody would lie for: a quieter table if one is free, tap water, a menu they can read, a moment outside with re-entry at the manager's say-so. Safety and capacity rules still apply to everyone.
What is your position on trans people and toilets?
The Glitter Standard does not tell a venue how to designate its toilets. That is the venue's lawful decision under the Equality Act 2010 and the EHRC Code of Practice. What we require is a written, lawful policy staff can explain; wherever physically possible one private, lockable facility anyone can use; and that no guest is ever challenged, questioned about their body or humiliated at a toilet door. Staff act on behaviour, never on who someone is. The wording is on The StandardReadiness check.
Is this only for LGBTQIA+ people?
No. It is every strand of diversity, not one: equity, not only equality, because treating people fairly is not always treating them identically. LGBTQIA+ inclusion and neurodiversity sit at its heart because those are the guests most often failed on a night out. Disability runs through all ten points.
Who owns The Glitter Standard?
An asset-locked community interest company with no shares and no dividends, founded by two people with decades in events, licensing and the night-time economy. The Standards Council owns the Ten. The board is an independent chair and one founder. Founder pay is capped, set by the chair and published every year. Governance in full.
What is Glitterbomb's role?
Who tests, and how do I complain?
Ambassadors are volunteers from the communities we serve, including student societies. They are trained, they always visit in pairs, their expenses are paid and they never visit the same venue twice in a year. Anyone can complain about a venue or about us through the anonymous form on the governance page.
